Lifeline Data Centers to open state-of-the-art facility in Fort Wayne, Ind.
With its upcoming opening of a new state-of-the-art facility in Fort Wayne, Lifeline Data Centers is fulfilling a void in Indiana’s second largest city, said the company’s co-owner, Alex Carroll.
Lifeline Data Centers, a Rated-4 data center headquartered in Indianapolis, had initially announced its intention to expand last year. When construction is complete, the Fort Wayne facility will provide the area with one of the first commercial colocation centers in the country that is both rated-4 for power and cooling, in addition to being EMP (electromagnetic pulse) ready, Carroll said.
The addition of a colocation center with those features is long overdue in the city, according to Carroll. “Fort Wayne has one of the largest concentrations of military contractors, as well as a lot of high tech things going on in the city,” Carroll said in a videotaped interview. However, data center support options have been minimal.
EMP shields are significant, Carroll added, because they provide protection against electromagnetic pulses and interferences that can happen naturally or as acts of local terrorism or corporate espionage.
The need for EMP protection has been a concern on a national scale.
The additional layer of security offered by EMP shields are critical to assuring uptime, according to Jason Verge, an editor with Data Center Knowledge. “While EMP attacks have not been common in the past, there are critical points of failure that could cause an attack to be catastrophic,” he said. “The increasing importance of data centers to North American infrastructure means providers need to do better at both pushing regulation of utilities and protecting the data residing within their walls.”
The opening of the Fort Wayne facility will be another milestone in Lifeline Data Centers’ history in Indiana. Since 2001, the company has been serving companies in numerous industries, including software development, healthcare, life sciences, utilities and government. It provides a high level of offsite data security solutions decreasing the risk of downtime and associated expenses.
