Big Data and Big Challenges: What does it mean for data centers?

According to a recent study on the Digital Universe, it is estimated that within a span of 8 years, the amount of digital data would have exceeded 40 Zettabytes.

The digital data thus accumulated is mainly due to data generated by inter machine communication over local or wide spread networks. The rise of intelligent or the so called Smart machines would contribute greatly towards this trend. Huge experiments conducted by labs across the globe, like the CERN Large Haldron Collider experiment, would add significantly towards this escalating data crisis.

But with big data comes big challenges. As more data is generated, more will be the complexity of tools involved in storing and analyzing them.

Raw data is not a useful resource as it has to undergo several phases of analysis and processing such as data mining, warehousing, etc. This would mean data centers would need higher storage capacity, intense cooling solutions to keep the mercury down and deploy more staff.
